The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is responsible for receiving and processing applications for concealed weapon permits and issuing permits to North Dakota citizens. To obtain a permit, the applicant first must successfully complete the testing process, and then be recommended by local law enforcement in the jurisdiction where the applicant resides. There are two types of permits: Class 1, which requires the applicant to successfully complete classroom instruction, a written open book test, and a proficiency test; and Class 2, which only requires successful completion of the open book test. The Class 1 permit is accepted for reciprocity in more states than the Class 2 permit.
The BCI is prohibited by law from providing information about the status of a concealed weapon permit application. It takes up to 30 days from the date we receive the application from local law enforcement. If there is a problem with your application, it will be returned to you. If your check has been cashed, your application is being processed. Please allow 30 days after the date your check was cashed, plus mailing.
